St.George's Archcathedral in Lviv - one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of the city, the pearl of Ukrainian Baroque. The main shrine of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, where for a long time was the residence of the archbishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The first church on the Svyatoyursky hill in Lviv was founded in the days of Galicia-Volhynia. The current temple complex was built in 1744-70 years by B.Meretin project that connected the Rococo style with Ukrainian sacral aesthetics. On the main facade there are sculptures of I.Pinsel. On the bell tower placed the oldest bell in Ukraine (1341). The most valuable relic in temple - the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary (XVII century). In the cathedral of St. George buried metropolitans A.Sheptitsky, B.Sterniuk and patriarch I. Slipyj . Nearby situated the Palace of the Metropolitans, in which in 2001 stayed during his visit to Ukraine Pope John Paul II. Since 1998, St. George's Cathedral with the ensemble of the historic center of Lviv was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
